INTRO: Kite Making Class, Feb. 11; noon to four
We will have a kite making workshop on February 11th from noon to four. The class has room for 12 club members. Gather early at the kite field for a quick club meeting, then on to the class.
The kite is designed by Ron Petralito. His concept was to build a kite with easily found supplies from common stores. The sail is 11” x 17” sheets of 20# colored paper from Kinko’s. Wooden dowels from Home Depot. Shipping tape, reinforced tape from office supply; swivels from the fishing section at a department store. Or you could build these designs with Tyvek; ripstop nylon; even the funny pages sprayed with lacquer. Wooden dowels could be replaced with bamboo sticks, or tapered carbon fiber rods. Ron will introduce you to his designs. Creativity starts here.
Ron Petralito had his ‘KOI 4 Sheeter’ published in the Autumn 2011 issue of AKA Kiting Journal. He’s in town from Maryland and has volunteered to teach us how to build his small Swedge design. Reading the 4 sheeter article will make things quicker in the classroom (pay close attention to making spar pockets on pages 27 & 30).
All participants will need to bring:
1. a razor knife with spare blades;
2. metal ruler 24” or longer;
3. and a pencil.
We’ll try to post the six page article on the San Diego Kite Club website. You’ll also find a cad drawing of the design we’ll be building, “The Swedge”
Warning: class is free; donation box will be at the door to reimburse the treasury for material
Dave Corning; club secretary.
